REMODEL - Paper Rolls and Paste: Staircase Closet

What does one do with a closet under the stairs, other than stow some poor orphaned family member because he’s “different”. The room one of the two ideas for the project that was intended just for the kids. Trust me, try climbing in there as an adult. You will come out with at least one bump in the head. We finished off the under the stairs hideout with a wood floor but the little room needed some warming up. Wallpaper was the best option!

I wanted the kids drive the selection process but initially I thought they wanted to stick with the Harry Potter theme. Ignorant me, didn’t factor in that we’ve been pretty vocal about how the author of said books, is not that much of a friend to the LGBTQ+ community. My first batch of wallpapers fitting the Harry Potter theme, was a pretty celestial mood board of the wizarding world. From the actual Moradors Map printed for the wall, to the Black family tree. I know, that’s pretty dark considering the backstory to the wallpaper. Not my shining moment. I think the kids only like one of the wallpaper designs in that batch.

It didn’t work, so I jumped at it to try, try, try again! The kids then explored a a floral option and more natural landscape wallpapers. There was some great options and the kids kept leaning towards some of the darker options. The options varied in pricing but the good news, the one’s the kids were liking more were on the more affordable price range. Initially they were leaning toward a very bright and very busy floral pattern. I have a feeling Lochlan was strong armed into that option. When I did a mockup to the room with the paper, the kids changed their mind.

In the third batch of papers, we opted for more muted options. This bunch of papers was more fruitful and the kids liked the idea of a more simple paper that was in calming color. In the end the kids liked the idea of having a bird background gave the room a more calming feel and perfect for a kids imagination. Margot has already had the first sleepover in the room. The kids love it. We ended up pulling two cot mattresses from the camping gear for kids to sit on. I think in the end, we will need more pillows to make it comfy. Whats going to be interesting is how this room is going to be kept clean.

The selections was a Farrow & Ball wallpaper. The Yukitori wallpaper came a few very soft white colors and hues of pink. The kids decided the blue background with the gold birds in flight was the more soothing option. I was worried before the install, that the dark blue was going to make the room feel smaller. After the paper went up, the kids were over the moon and I was impressed the blue actually brightened the room. What do you think?
