HK5corner Hidden Gems: Buster by the Bedside
You might remember a post about the Mother Bluth painting last month. During my research of the artist for that painting, I also started researching another artist. When I purchased Mother Bluth from the Arrested Development themed group show at Gallery 1988. I also purchased this painting of a fine young gentleman (boy) named Buster Bluth, the son of Mother Bluth, played by the hilarious Tony Hale. I was obsessed with this show when it started airing back in 2003. At the time I was living SF and I wasn’t home that often because the company I was working for had me working from 5AM-8PM almost every day. And well my evenings out were my only getaway back then. I did however have a TIVO thanks to my soon to be husband moving in with me. Allowing me to enjoy the show at any time. This piece came into our collection in 2012, the summer before the twins arrived to our small family. When I saw this piece in the show at Gallery 1988, I had to have it. Along with the giclee print of Buster’s mom, mimic’d in a vintage Martini & Rossi ad poster. When both of these paintings arrived at our home, I knew exactly where it was going to be placed in the house. After the two piece were framed at City Picture Frame in SF. Buster returned home and has been hanging in our master bedroom ever since.

For over a decade Buster has stared at us sleeping. He took a two year break but has returned once again to being our guardian angle during our slumber. I’ve heard it all about this painting. I am well aware some family and friends are freaked out about certain pieces in the collection, and poor buster is one of them. I don’t care. I still love him, just as much as the dead kids in my Katrina painting by Serge Gay Jr. With Buster back where he belonged. I wondered what has the artist been up to lately.
“That Is Not How A Chicken Sounds…” Tim Maclean 2012
The piece is titled "That Is Not How A Chicken Sounds…” by Tim Maclean. Sadly my research on the artist went dry, just like the other artist I had purchased in the show. In 2013, he did have a tumblr site up and running and an etsy store. I messaged him on the site and even got a kind response from him. I have two pieces in our collection from Tim. The other two pieces are also from themed group shows. One show back at Gallery 1988 was based on Big Bang Theory tv show. The second piece is from the Bad Dads 3 show at Spoke Gallery in SF. This Wes Anderson theme annual show was big draw for me. I have at least a dozen pieces from this group show going back to 2010. The third piece is "White Cape Rules” based on The Fantastic Mr. Fox movie.
“White Cape Rules” - Tim Maclean 2013
Tim Maclean seems to be still living in Scotland. From what I can tell, he stopped producing work or showing it in galleries in 2013. In 2014, he started the very popular online gallery, based in the UK, WOW x WOW. Not even realizing it, I’ve been collecting from this gallery and Tim for some time now. Scrolling through the artists he’s worked with, is like looking at my walls. From Casey Wheldon, Sarah Joncas, and Lauren Brevner. He’s certainly still active in the gallery world, with group shows still a main staple at WOW. It would be interesting to see him return to his artwork. I’ve always enjoyed his work, and would love to add more to our collection. I did reach out to him to check in and say hello and thank you for the great art we still have up on the walls. The twins had fox up on their bedroom wall up until we remodeled. While it’s still in storage, I plan on filling up Lochlan’s room with more artwork, and he wants that one in his room for sure.
