HK5corner: Help Us Choose an CRITTER

These are the form braces to shape the back posts of the rocking chair.

If you have been following the HK5corner feed on Instagram, then yourhave seen the news that our third Boggs Rocker is in production at Shea Alexander’s shop in Virginia. Over this summer we did a road trip from Tennessee to Virginia and realized our road map for trip drove right past Timberville, VA, which is home to the Alexander Brothers workshops. Before we took delivery of the rockers last spring, I was already thinking I should have ordered three.

After delivery, I noticed it was great for Clem and I to sit together but having a third allowed a kid to sit with us and then I saw my twins sitting together one day, while Paley sister sat on the deck. We needed a third rocker. Shea and I talked about it for a while and he placed me in queue for the next batch he planned on making. During our visit to the shop the kids got a hands on with some of the tools and even learned how the posts were shaved down.

Here the back slats of the chairback are heading into the kiln. I think it’s called a kiln.

If you read the last blog post about the rockers you will remember the kids each picked an animal to place on the chairs. Margot Allen chose a fox, Lochlan wanted a snake slithering up a back post, Paley chose a frog. Shea placed the frog climbing up the back post. The plan is each kid gets a chair when it’s time for them to be passed on. I decided Paley and Lochlan had the more fun chairs and Margot should get a fun one as well. If you are curious about the fourth animals on first chairs, head over to blog post HERE to see what we chose.

The current plan is Margot Allen liked the idea of a cat on the back post. Shea and I talked about it, and he’s going to carve a cat waiting to pounce  on a mouse on one of the pack posts. The mouse will be placed on one of the back rungs of the chair. Now we do have both back posts on the two chairs at HK5corner and we need something on the second post. This is where we need your help! We need your opinion on what critter we should place on the second post. Below is a list of the animals that Shea has in his wheel house. Feel free to just drop a comment below on this post. Or shoot me an email/text directly. The critter with most requests will get whittled by Shea.

  • Snail

  • Lady bug

  • Bee

  • Squirrel

  • Moth

  • Otter

  • Bear

The back slats of the chair now rest on a drying form after being pulled from the kiln.

The fun doesn’t stop there. Each person who submits a suggestion will be entered in a raffle to win a special gift connected to the rocker. If you want to leave an anonymous comment/choice, please shoot me an email with your choice to make sure I add your name to the raffle. We just added an otter to list. That would be my pick but I also love the moth and snail idea. Can’t wait to see what you pick. For now, Shea has already posted three videos on the 3rd chairs construction. I’ve startted sharing them on instagram as well, through the HK5corner feed. Enjoy your Sunday, and thank you for reading all the way through this post.
