Allen & Lochlan 13th Portrait: Ryan Martin For the Rescue
The kids and Ryan Martin
Two years ago I ran across Ryan Martin’s work on instagram. He had a piece in a group show at Modern Eden in SF and most recently, I really liked his watercolor pieces of boys in the water. At the time we started talking, all three kids were swimming on a summer recreation team. And both enjoy the swimming world. It made sense to do another three portrait run with one artist. Ryan was up for the commission from the start. While we did a reference shoot to provide him photos. In the end, he wanted to work on the lighting more for the style, or posing he had in mind for the three pieces.
We ended up taking a drive up to studio in the North Bay and luck would have it, on a gloomy day, the sun popped out just long enough for him to snap some reference shots. From there, Ryan worked really fast on the three pieces. The twins portraits were finished first. Probably a little easier, since Paley is five years older than the twins, and the twins look very much alike. What he was able to capture just in the pencil sketches, was perfect. In the end, the twins two portraits look almost exactly like them. Working with Ryan was so easy, and he works so fast. He was even impressed how easy it was to work with all three kids.
On the visit to his studio, we also got to see some of his new work. He’s doing a series right now with UFO’s and I am obsessed with the paintings. I am looking forward to seeing him show those, would mind adding a few to hkfamcollection. Looking at all the portraits we have done over the last 18 years, this is the firs time we really have done a water or blue based portrait. The zombie twins portraits by Lori Nelson do have some blue in them, but the tones are very dark. I really enjoy the bright colors. A lot of the portraits lately have a lot of bright colors.
