It’s Not The Chicks But It’s Just As Good

Natalie Maines released a new CD back in early May. I had downloaded it but with all the craziness in our lives, I haven’t had a chance to get the music onto my phone to be listen in the car. Over the past few days I’ve been listening to a few of the songs. For those of you who have no clue who Natalie Maines is, she’s the lead singer for the Dixie Chicks. I am sure you know who she is! 

The whole world has been waiting for the chicks to come out with a new album for almost 7 years now. I think the BUSH years really scared them as a group. They were very outspoken about the former president during his term and lets just say, middle america held CD burnings. Maines has been absent while her bandmates, sister duo Emily & Martie have been worked hard with their new band the Court Yard Hounds. “Mother” is Maines first solo album of her career. 

Fair warning, it’s not Dixie Chicks but it’s so good to hear Maines voice with new material. The sound is certainly a new for Maines. Deep down there is country soul but on the top layers you get some old school alternative with a dash of 80‘s pop and a good slather of classic rock. “Take it On Faith” and “Come Cryin’ To Me” were my instant favorites. “Free Life” I think is the only song that has hint Dixie but it’s a great story song that really showcases Maines vocal talent. I would certainly recommend any Dixie Chick fan to add this album to their collection.
