What to Watch: Disney+

You know you’ve seen the ads, you know you have been going back and forth about just paying for Disney+ for one month ($6.99) just to see The Hamilton movie. I am here to say, you are missing out on a big deal. We’ve seen Hamilton twice on stage now and most recently we watched the Hamilton Movie on Disney+. We enjoyed seeing the movie but can honestly say the movie does not do the incredible choreography justice on the screen. That said, if you are not ready to pay crazy prices for tickets, the movie is truly the next best thing. The main reason, the cast of the movie is literally the original cast of the show. Which is EPIC!

Now going back to Disney+ and whether you will or will not get the membership to watch Hamilton. Let's just start with all the shows you are missing on Disney+ and how even a one month subscription will give you access to them. First there is The Mandalorian, if you consider yourself a Star Wars fan, please hand over your SW Card now. This show is spin off from the franchise which brings the world of the Mandalorian’s way (think of a Boba Fett origin story, but not Fett related, yet.) This show is certainly a step in the right direction for the Star Wars universe. From the great casting to the writing and the round table of directors who not only work together but lift up the world they are collectively building with the show. If you are an avid Star Wars viewer, the show is perfect Segway back into the universe. My 7 year olds watch the show and I would even let me 5 year old watch it.

Don’t stop there on Disney+, there is a Making-of the Mandalorian series which not only a great education process of the filming experience but also a lot of back story to the production and it’s great cast. Moving away from Star Wars, there is all the great Marvel content. Not just the movies but also the TV Shows. If you have tweens/teens you might want to check out the The Runaways series. Based on the comic book of the same name. These slightly entitled band of misfits isn’t really a “poor me” storyline, more like, how dysfunctional can a family get.

Another great series just for Disney+ is the Hero Project. A wonderful docu series shows about tween and teen social struggles and flying beyond their struggles which is an inspiring for young kids. Another great series for kids and parents is the new The Imagineering Story doc series. Highlighting all the great features of all the Disney parks across the globe. Then there are all the great classic Disney movies you used to watch on The Wonderful World of Disney on Sunday’s. A couple of years ago I tried to make it a tradition for the kids to watch old Disney movies on Sunday evenings to carry the tradition. I would say now we may watch a movie once a month. We are usually catching up on Drag Race!

Last I wanted to highlight a great show for girls. Diary of a Future Presidents follows the life of Tessa Romero who in adulthood become the president and the show presents her origin story. This show is beautifully written and tackles a lot of the social issues young adults and tweens will struggle with. The show’s unknown cast is what sets this show off the regular, over acting Disney shows. I even recommend parents to watch it as well. This show is a pretty quick watch and it’s easy to get hooked fast. The twins at 7, watched the show and really enjoyed it.
