What to Watch: Only Murder in the Building(s)

If you haven’t watched it yet, now is the moment! We already have four great seasons! This show just keeps rolling out the amazing characters, on top of three amazing personalities bringing a serial podcast to life. From Nathan Lane in the first season, and then some big names like Melissa McCarthy and Meryl Streep. The show is a gold mine of many talented people. From the quirky neighbors who share space with the leads, to the season only walk on characters who usually end up dead. Big shout out to the amazing Jackie Hoffman, who has managed to survive for four seasons on the show. We’ve all had a Hoffman living in our building, and I wish she was my neighbor, crass on top of crass, funny to the core.

Of all of the cast members, almost everyone I’ve talked to about the show, have issue with Martin Short. Honestly, the way Martin plays off Steve Martin on the show, his schtick actually melds with Martin and the rest of the cast. I mean Martin Short and Meryl Streep? If you are fan of mystery shows, this is Murder She Wrote on speed! Thanks to the kids I became a fan of Selena Gomez’s music. But I was not familiar with her roots with Wizards of Waverley. After the first season I was hooked on the dynamics she built with Martin & Short.

The show saw it’s fourth season, and one of it’s best writing, last Fall. And guess what, the fifth season is dropping this week on September 9th. Nathan Lane returns for season 5 which is filled with a long roster of seasoned talent. From Bobby Cannavale, Renée Zellweger, Logan Lerman, Christoph Waltz, and the hilarious Keegan-Michael Key. Also joining the cast this season, are two of my favorite actresses ever, Dianne Wiest (Bullets Over Broadway) and Téa Leoni (Madam Secretary.) And yes, I’ve written about Leoni on this blog before with great admiration. My only hope this season is Cannavale is not type cast as the antagonist again on a show. I liked when he played lovable Vince on Will & Grace.

Leoni’s last episode appearance had me tickle pink, but even more so was Hoffman’s character Uma Heller’s exit on the elevator was another priceless moment. “I’ll send it back up, if I feel like it!” While the death of the show regular paints a new season, I am excited to see how all these characters play out in the 5th season. My one hope is the Diane Wiest is playing Lester’s wife Lorraine
