REMODEL - Paper Rolls and Paste: Sitting Room
The sitting room is going to be our little sanctuary room for reading, or quiet splendor. It’s also home to the kids Christmas tree, a tradition I’ve wanted to mimic from my childhood. Growing up, we always had a kids Christmas tree and mom’s Christmas tree. Where was dad’s tree you may ask, my dad was the one putting them up and lighted each Christmas. When I started getting a real tree in my apartment back in San Francisco, I always wanted to strip the walls and put up wall paper. That building was nearing 100 years old when I moved in, and I was probably going to be dealing with a lot asbestos from the paint layered on those walls.

For the sitting room, I wanted a patterned paper, and I was leaning initially with a fabric wallpaper on the walls. After some thought about layout of the room, eventually I realized that the paper would start to get damaged pretty quickly, with the room being laid out so tightly with furniture. I was planning on making a walkway behind a couch along the long wall of the room help to help with the flow. Eventually, the silk fabric wallpapers I was looking at, would start to show some damage, from people walking by and brushing against the paper. Not to mention, greasy hand stains along the wall. Originally I was looking at rich green tone wallpapers, but I realized I was linking the sitting room to the green guest bathroom next door to the sitting room.
Moving away from fabric, the next option was sisal or grasscloth papers. I couldn’t wrap my head around the fact that the same wallpaper was on the walls of office buildings and even the kids ortho doctor office. From there, I shifted my focus to some bigger patterns. I stumbled across the York Wall coverings website and ran when I decide to take a look at red wallpapers. There I found the perfect pattern. The Harlowe design did pop up when I was searching for green, but the green version of the design was too mossy. The red/gold version was the perfect combination.
Installation was perfection, thanks to the amazing Debora. Even the little detailings around the wood trim around the ceiling and bookcases, was perfect. Alot of the wood trim was finished with a white calking because of the white walls initially. Debora color matched the wood to help prevent a white start line between the paper and the wood. From the diamond design in gold, which matches the light and outlet covers. As we setup the Christmas tree this year, the red color was perfect even with a Christmas tree. While the room didn’t have it’s proper furniture. We were able to spend xmas morning opening stalkings next to the fireplace, first thing in the morning. I am really happy with the final selections for this room and I look forward to getting new furniture in the room, to make it even cozier. More to come!
